Hard to believe it is already mid-September in Boston but without calendars, television and the internet how else would those of us living in and around Massachusetts ever have a clue that the fall season was upon us?

The answer is simple.

Our hair will tell us.

More precisely the visible difference in how our hair looks, feels and behaves with the onset of cooler and dryer temperatures are a few of the most obvious indicators that cooler seasons are upon us.

While we all know that come fall in Boston, we get excited about changing out our closets from our sandals for our rain boots to putting away our linen skirts for our wool pants-we must not abandon the seasonal change demands of our most coveted asset-our hair!

So, you may be asking what should I be doing differently, more of or less of to my hair now that the cooler weather conditions of Boston, Massachusetts are upon us?

Salon De Cinzia recently stumbled upon a pretty interesting online article on www.beautips.info which highlighted some great cooler weather hair care tips to keep in mind to help us all ease into the colder weather months in New England. We have captured and listed some of these tips below to share with our clients and readers.

Low temperatures affect our hair. Exposed to frost temperatures the hair deteriorates, and this is exactly why we should always take good care of it. Every time you wash your hair, make sure that you use a mask or a conditioner designed for damaged hair (though your hair might not be damaged, just make sure that you treat it in advance)!

For stimulating your natural hair growth and for protecting its roots in the cold weather, use castor oil. You can use it in its pure natural condition or buy a hair mask based on castor oil.Do not overuse your hairdryer. Overusing your hairdryer will contribute to dry damaged hair. Try to blow dry your hair as little as possible. When you use your hairdryer, try using the ‘cool’ setting. Allow hair to dry naturally. If a hair dryer must be used at all, then turn it on at its lowest setting. Heat from dryers, curling irons and other styling equipment are damaging to hair.

If you have colored or chemically treated hair, moisturizing your hair regularly will never be more important. Colored hair has a tendency to dull in the winter months, and this is largely due to the diminishing sun hours and the lack of natural moisture in the air.

Shampooing the hair too often can exacerbate dryness just at the point when the hair and scalp are drying out more easily. Try not to shampoo more than once a day, and aim to use only high quality hair care products which actively moisturize the hair.

Regular hot oil treatments, at least once or twice a week will also seal in some extra moisture for your hair. It is important that if you start this routine, that you continue with it through the winter. And you can use olive oil, castor oil or jojoba oil.

Long hair, medium or short, doesn’t matter, don’t wash it daily!!!! Also, although you might have some raised expenses during fall and winter time, our suggestion is that you make time and keep some money apart for some special treatments at specialized saloons. A normal nourishing treatment lasts for 35 minutes and should be followed every three weeks.

Salon De Cinzia’s April Cut-A-Thon raises thousands for Family Autism Center

On Friday, April 29th, the staff at Salon De Cinzia opened its doors to the Newton community for a very special cause-a Cut-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit the Family Autism Center (FAC) a 501 (c)3 non-profit based in Westwood, Massachusetts. The non-profit organization provides support and services to people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.

Salon De Cinzia’s staff enjoyed spending a special day with existing clients, family and friends.

During the 4p-8p Cut-A-Thon, all hands were on deck to welcome new clients to the salon as an opportunity to get to know the stylists and staff.

While clients waited to have their hair tended to they noshed on delicious fare and treats donated by generous local businesses including: Four Corners Pizza – who donated pizzas and calzones, M&D Liquors & Vino di Vino who donated wine, Edible Arrangements who donated a fruit basket.

During the Cut-A-Thon, all of the salon’s guests were invited to bid on a variety of donated raffle items from generous local companies and organizations including: Salon De Cinzia – two large baskets of products, and a gift card for a “day of beauty” – wash, cut, and style, seaweed facial, and a manicure, Roche Bros. – $100 gift card and a $25 gift card, Sushi 55 – $25 gift card, Joe’s American Bar & Grille – $25 gift card, Wicked Pizza – $20 gift card, Doug Flutie’s Foundation- which donated an autographed picture of the man himself!

The event benefited both the clients, who received a shampoo, cut and blow dry for $50 while also raising awareness and funds for the Family Autism Center. One hundred percent of the $50 proceeds generated by the event were donated to the non-profit organization!

Clients were also able to peruse and shop from a special guest vendor, The Cabbage Rose (Hampton Falls NH), who was on site for the event to sell jewelry, scarves, and bags. This amazing company then donated a percentage of all its proceeds from the night to the Family Autism Center foundation as well.
